Beauty After The Storm

If you live in, or anywhere near Nashville, you are probably pretty familiar with all the rain and storms we've been dealing with for the past week.

Well, on Saturday, I second shot a wedding (i.e. was the assistant and second photographer to the main photographer at a wedding) with Matthew Simmons, in Woodbury, Tennessee. The whole day was beautiful, although definitely a bit warm and muggy. There was a chance of rain in the forecast, but it held off for the entire day, which was great, despite my iPhone going off in my pocket, telling me of tornado watches.

Right as we left for the evening, the "scary" clouds started coming in, threatening rain and a possible storm, but by that time everything was over and it didn't matter anymore.

On the drive home, at one point, we were driving under clouds that Matt thought were cool... and *I* thought were eery, haha. They were floating closer to the ground than either of us were ever used to seeing, and they weren't that typical flat grey color most storm clouds are. They had this smooth blue tint to them. It's kind of hard to describe, but unfortunately, I hadn't thought to grab my camera at this point.

As we kept driving, I kept looking around, looking at clouds, half out of wonder, half out of nervousness, when out of nowhere we hit this supremely beautiful red and blue sky.

I mean, it was unreal. I have never in my life, ever seen anything so magnificent.  Matt and I watched it for a while, just marveling at the vibrancy of the colors and how smooth the gradient was between the reds and blues, but it wasn't until the colors started to recede that I remembered, "Oh yeah... I have a camera in the back trunk."

Luckily, Matthew's car is a hatch-back, so I unbuckled, hopped back to the trunk to pull my camera out, and made my way back to my seat in the front.

This is just a little bit of what we experienced the other day.

I honestly don't think this does it any kind of justice, and it was most definitely a "You had to be there" kind of moment, but this will give you at least an idea of what we saw.

It's Hot Outside - Personal Photos | Emily McGonigle Photography

The other day I let Robin, my kitty, outside on the porch to play. When he came inside, he went straight for his bowl of food, and then once he was done with that, he walked through the living room to a spot on the floor uncovered by the throw rug, right up against the wall.

He had been doing this consistently for the past week or so, and I finally decided to photograph him, as he looked as if he were thinking, "MAN, it's hot out there! Being a cat is hard work..."

I think he's simply adorable. But I may be entirely biased... Haha.

Nashville Portrait Photographer | Lisa Van Atta Beauty Shoot

Happy Saturday! I hope everyone has faired well this week, and will get a chance to enjoy this weekend (if you haven't started already).

A while ago I posted a behind the scenes blog of my shoot with hair and makeup artist Meko Davis, and model, Lisa Van Atta. While Meko and Lisa both have had the images for a little while, life got busy, and I haven't had a chance to share them with *you* yet. So I wanted to do that today!

Working with both Meko and Lisa was fantastic.

After working with Meko on this session, I ended up hiring her on for a session with one of my senior portrait clients, Sarah Ngo. Once again, she did a fabulous job with Sarah's hair and makeup, and I look forward to hopefully getting more opportunities to work with her in the future!

Lisa was amazing to work with as well, as she was super comfortable in front of the camera and didn't need much direction, although when direction was given, she followed through with it beautifully. She honestly made my job too easy, haha.

The idea for this session was to enable Meko to show off some of her styling skills, so we wanted to keep it super simple. Plain white background, beauty-inspired type shots, hair and makeup focused. The lighting setup was simple, and didn't change much. There were some personal artistic touches made in post on my end, but other than that, everything was pretty straightforward, which is how we wanted it to be.

Lisa told me her favorite was the set with the red lipstick. I think my favorites are a tie between those and the blue-lipped set.

Take a look and judge for yourself which are your favorites, and maybe share with us in the comments below! :)

So... I dunno why I didn't just include these four in the first batch of photos I did with Alexa.  I think that I was going to try and make the first look into 2 different ones since we added the jacket... but I ended up only pull 4 images out of that set anyway, so I could have just processed those quick and threw them in with the first group. But I didn't.

So they're getting their own blog post.  LOL

Here are 4 more images from Alexa's first look.  WITH jacket. ;)

Life has been insane. Can I just say that?

Since our move to Nashville, life has been absolutely insane.  There is a lot to figure out, a lot of work to do, and unfortunately not enough time to do it all.

That being said, I keep stealing a few moments here and there (aka. staying up until insane hours in the morning -- it's 3:32am right now) to try and get some editing done.

Because of this crazy balancing act that I'm still adjusting to, I've decided that I am going to post Alexa Poletti's images as I finish each "look", rather than waiting until the very end of the entire set, because it could be a while... haha.  (Who knew that adjusting to the move to Nashville could be so time consuming?!)

In the beginning of the year, I drove to Washington D.C. to meet and shoot with Alexa.  We did something like 4 looks in an awesome foggy location!

Here are the images from the first look that we did, in front of, what Alexa likes to call, the "Troll Cave".  XD

Model Photography | Alexa Poletti | Sneak Peak

About 2 or so months ago, I was minding my own business, multi-tasking between editing and surfing the Book of Faces, when suddenly a little red notification popped up, informing me that Alexa Poletti had posted to my wall. What she had posted to my wall was a very enthusiastic cry of, "Oh why must you live so far away!  I want to shoot with you!!!"

Little did she know, I had been wanting to shoot with *her* for a long while now, so I immediately replied with, "Psh... 3 hours?  That's not *that* far... Let's make it happen!!"

And we did.

Nashville Portrait Photography, Tennessee, Alexa Poletti, Model Photography

One Sunday, in the beginning of January, I made the 3 hour trek down to Washington D.C. to meet the wonderful Alexa Poletti and do an AWESOME shoot in the thick fog that the weather decided to gift us that day.

The fog was so thick driving down to D.C., that when I crossed over a long bridge that ran over the river, it felt like I was flying in the air, because all I could see around my car were clouds.  It was at that moment I realized how epic it would be if the fog kept up throughout our shoot, and I was hoping with all my might it wouldn't dissipate by the time I arrived.

By the time I got into D.C., the fog had indeed seemed to have lifted, replaced only by cloudy skies and mist.  But, much to my delight, Alexa informed me that the locations that she had previously scouted out were close to a river, so there would probably be plenty of fog for us to play in!

And BOY did we get to play in some fog!!

It was a TON of fun shooting with Alexa!  It turns out that we have a decent amount in common, and our sense of humors are right on par with each other, so it made for some pretty fun and interesting conversation while we shot.

We did a handful of different looks that day.  The first bunch were variations of 2 different, edgy, rock looks that Alexa put together, and the 3rd was a fun, casual look.  Alexa did all of the styling, and I'd say she did a pretty darn good job!  Not only is she a fabulous model, and great at putting a look together, but she's *also* an awesome photographer!  Be sure to check out her work!

Now, as most of you are probably well aware by this point, my husband and I JUST moved to Nashville, Tn!  We've officially been here 7 days, and I love our little house and I am excited to see what the future holds for us here!  That being said, the past 7 days have been nothing but moving, unpacking, unpacking... moving... unpacking... cleaning... unpacking... cleaning.............. unpacking........................

I started to go through photography withdrawal!  HAHA!

Finally, today I sat down and busted out some work that had been put on hold due to the move, and I managed to pull one of the images from Alexa's shoot that I particularly love.

Now, when you see this one again later, it may look a bit different.  I found myself playing around in Photoshop earlier this evening with different looks.  It's fun to experiment from time to time to see what I can come up with, and I ended up creating something that I think works pretty well with, at least the portion of the shoot that this image is from, however, I don't know if I'm 100% sold on it yet.

SO... rather than posting my experiments and then changing my mind when I wake up and come back to see this with fresh eyes tomorrow, (Today, by the time you all are reading this, since it is currently 4:38am... ) I decided that I would just give you a "clean edit" preview of this shot.

I may decide to keep it this way... I may decide to go crazy... who knows?!

I'm terribly unpredictable. ;)

But in any case, here is one of my favorite shots from the first part of the day with Alexa!!

Cait W. | Winter Portraits

Wintertime is often thought of as grey, dreary, cold... just... not fun.  Unless you really love the holidays... THEN, it might be fun.  But I think we can all agree that the winter *weather* can be less than pleasant at times.  Because of this, a lot of location photographers, including myself, tend to slow down and catch up on all of their posting, blogging, (packing to move to Nashville...), what have you. I thought I was pretty much done shooting for the season when the lovely Caitlin W. contacted me about doing a shoot.  I was more than happy to stretch my muscles and get out and shoot with her (especially since I had just gotten a new lens I was DYING to try out!! ).

I ended up taking Cait to a trail my husband and I had hiked a few weeks prior.  When Keith and I were there hiking, there was a spot that had tall grass-like vegetation that looked really awesome!   From the moment I saw it, I knew I wanted to do a shoot in it, however as luck would have it, by the time Cait and I arrived to the trail a few weeks later (after a snow, and some ice, and some good heavy rain), the "grass" was all flattened down and matted together.  I was bummed.  ...For a second.  Because instead of cool tall grasses... the trade off was AWESOME, glorious, sunlight.

I was down with that. ^_^

All I had been concentrating on during the weeks approaching the shoot, was that grass.  I ignored the fact that the sunlight had the potential to be pretty rockin' because... well... my luck always has it that when I plan on shooting in awesome sunlight..........there isn't any.  But I lucked out this time.  :D

BOY did we luck out!

And while it was a bit chilly, it wasn't NEARLY as cold as it *could* have been, so the day was fabulous all around.

Wanna see??? :D

Here is what Cait and I ended up with from that day!!
