Live Music Photography | Al Holbrook Band & Cojo and the Konnects

At the end of February, I had the opportunity to shoot my first Live Music Photography gig at Venue 109, which was a cute little place, that I believe is available for rental for special events.  As far as stage lighting was concerned, it was a little dark on the edges, as there was only one light hitting the whole stage, however, where that light was aimed, there was this really awesome sweet spot where the contrast and tone was just, DELICIOUS.  Venue 109 is also a pretty cool place as far as listening to music is concerned too.  I was asked to come shoot by the awesome and wonderful Cojo of Cojo and the Konnects.  They're a really awesome *all female* soul band, that knows how to rock the house!  In addition to Cojo and the Konnects performing that night, there was an opening band called The Al Holbrook Band.  Like Keith and I, Al Holbrook is recently transplanted from Ohio to Nashville, although he's been around a bit longer than Keith and I... about 6 months I believe.  After hearing him and his band perform, I'm pretty sure he made a good decision coming to Nashville, because his performance was stellar. Check out some of the images highlighting the performances that night! :)

Stagnant Pools

Emily McGonigle Photography, Lehigh Valley, Pa, Band, Live Music, Appalachian Brewing Company

So back in June, Stagnant Pools played the Abbey Bar at Appalachian Brewing Company and I took a few frames of the performance. :)  Stagnant Pools is a duo (guitar/vox, and drums) that plays very cool rock that would appeal to anyone into the indie rock scene.  Check 'em out on FB - linked above - (or better yet a show), if you haven't heard these guys yet!

Listening Ritual

HEY YA'LL! I'm back with another drive-by post... and another after that to follow... but I figured I'd keep 'em separate since they're totally unrelated.  Like... not even similar.  XD

About 2 weeks ago I had the pleasure of getting to photograph Listening Ritual in the basement of the Croc Rock.

It was dark.

Really... really... dark.

But hey, the band was fun and the music was good, so who needs light when you have that, right?! ;)  ^_^

Here are a few of my favorite images from that show!

Goodfellas NYE 2011 | Crobot

They're the Dirty-faced Brethern, and they're taking PA and surrounding areas by storm!  They're Crobot and if you live anywhere near where they've played, and you haven't been out yet to see them, you are SERIOUSLY missing out! On New Years Eve 2011, Crobot played a show with 3 other bands:  A Dawn BecomingTrue Becoming, and Candlelight Red at Goodfella's Warehouse in Pottsville, Pa.

Self-described as "dirty groove rock", these guys hit the stage hard and don't stop until they're done!  They've been compared, by their fans, to bands such as Clutch, Queens of the Stoneage, The Mars Volta and the legendary Led Zeppelin!

It's serious stuff, people.

They're currently in the studio, working on pumping out their album for the world to devour, (which of course I hath documented and those images will be hitting the blog soon... ^_^ ), but until then you should DEFINITELY check them out on Facebook, ReverbNation, Youtube (Where you can see some of my BRILLIANT video skillz... O_o), and their Sign Me To profile, a site run by Roadrunner Records in order for bands to have the chance to be heard and discovered!

December 8th, 2011, they peaked on the Sign Me To rock charts at number 1 and on January 3rd, P.D Freeman over at Road Runner wrote, in his "Who Charted?" article (http://signmeto.roadrunnerrecords.com/blogs/2012-1-3-who-charted-january-3-2012),

I've been listening to the two albums recorded by criminally underrated/forgotten East Coast stoner rockers Core a lot lately (Revival, from 1996; The Hustle is On, from 1999; go find 'em), and Pennsylvania's Crobot remind me of those guys quite a bit. They've got all the right ingredients: booming, groove-oriented guitar riffs, high-pitched Wolfmother-esque vocals, and drumming like someone slamming a car trunk lid on your skull, over and over again. They've got swing, and power, and a tiny bit of psychedelia thrown into the mix, and they're worth your time. I bet they're great live, too. Give 'em a listen.

Also, for fun... I will include this more recent interview with Bishop for Popbreak.com:  http://pop-break.com/2012/01/30/shipwrecked-at-the-shore-interview-series-crobot/

Alright, that's enough praise and promotion for now, methinks.

SO...

Brandon, the frontman for the band, does this really interesting thing when they play... he tends to often gravitate towards a certain persona type, which he commits to for the entirety of the show that they're playing.

Towards the end of 2011, what the boys liked to refer to as his "evangelical" or "preacher" persona, came out at a couple of shows.  I got lucky and the NYE gig was one of 'em!

So... I bring to you... Pastor Brandon Yeagley, backed by the Dirty-Faced Brethren, preaching about the legend of the space-born killer, that is the CROBOT!!!!

Goodfellas NYE 2011 | True Becoming

Ladies and gentlemen... TRUE BECOMING!

And the BEST shot of the night...

BRACE yourself...

Goodfellas NYE 2011 | A Dawn Becoming

This is my last post for the day, I PROMISE!  XD It's just that I got all this stuff done at the Crobot show yesterday... because I'm a loser and I take my work to rock shows... XD

Anyway...

On New Years Eve 2011, my husband's band, Crobot played a show with 3 other bands:  A Dawn Becoming, True Becoming, and Candlelight Red

I shot 3.5 out of the 4 bands that played that night... (I had *intentions* of shooting CLR... but apparently their lighting scheme consists of...well... no light... so I was able to pop off a few frames before realizing my efforts were futile.  Oh well.)

BUT... the stage lighting for the *other* bands was good enough for me to pop off some decent shots!

So... I give to you...

A Dawn Becoming!

Grumpy's Jam (Part Duex)

Okay, so it's not TECHNICALLY a *second* part... but I know that I've posted images from this Jam before. This is a totally different night, but they had the little garden light/work light thingies... whatever you wanna call 'em... hanging in a different spot that I remember, so I took advantage of that and took a few shots for fun.  ^_^

The jam is run by Matt Roman and happens every Thursday night at 9 at Grumpy's Bar-B-Que Roadhouse in Mechanicsville, Pa!  If you live in the area you should definitely go check it out 1. Because the food is TO DIE FOR and 2. Because the jam is fun, wether you're sign up, or are just there to listen to some music, drink some beer, eat some food, and have a TON of fun! ^_^ CLICK HERE and 'like' Emily McGonigle Photography on Facebook!

Crobot | Roundhouse

Crobot played a show in the end of November at the Roundhouse in St. Clair, pa.  I took some pictures.  These are the results.  XD It's been interesting for me because lately I've been shooting in bars smaller than the clubs I used to shoot in (because original bands tend to get booked at small dive bars vs. the cover bands that tend to book bigger clubs where the patrons don't want to hear anything other than what they hear on the radio every day...) so there are times when I have either no stage lighting, or just shoddy lighting.

The lighting for this show was very scattered and sparse, as it was brought by the audio engineer that night, and thrown up and turned on.  This is fine if you're an audience member and just like watching a band under a few different colored lights, for effect, but it's not so great if you're a photographer, haha.

By the time I got these uploaded I realized that I really hated the color in all but two of the images, so I took this as an opportunity to play with black and white conversions ^_^  Hey... you know what they say... When the light's not right... convert to black and white!  XD  Okay, so I totally made that up, but that's sort of a general rule I go by... if the spotty stage lighting isn't mixing well with the ambient light, i just forget about color altogether and the images thank me in the end, haha.

And THESE are the two I couldn't stand *not* to have in color...

Broken Fayth

Hey guys! So real quick... I was reminded about these photos and I thought I'd throw 'em up on the blog real quick!

This is Broken Fayth, a Rock Band based out of Wiconisco PA!  Check 'em out on Facebook (http://www.facebook.com/pages/Broken-Fayth/182645728419887)

Oh... and while you're here... you may notice that the watermark says "Emily McGonigle Photography", rather than "Emily Rose"... that's because, for a number of reasons, I've decided to switch to using my last name rather than my middle name, so I'm going to slowly be integrating that into everything and hope to be officially running with it starting in January!

As always: CLICK HERE and 'like' Emily Rose Photography on Facebook!

BUT KEEP AN EYE OUT!  With the name change will come a PAGE change, as Facebook won't allow me to change the name of the page or the URL of the page, so I'm being forced to start fresh!
