Kelsey Satterwhite - Behind the Scenes Senior Portrait | Emily McGonigle Photography

This past weekend I had the pleasure of working with Kelsey Satterwhite, one of my 2014 senior models, on her senior portraits! The day of Kelsey's session, it was hot and the forecast threatened rain. However, knowing that we would have indoor options to camp out in, should the rain decide to come, we went ahead and pushed forward with the shoot anyway, and hoped the rain would stay away.

On Kelsey's shoot, I once again had the pleasure of working with the fabulous Jessica Steingard. When both Jessica and Kelsey arrived, we got to chatting about how Kelsey wanted her hair and makeup done for her session. She described soft curls and light makeup that enhanced her facial features, rather than heavier makeup that drew attention away from her natural beauty.

Kelsey's pamper session was a great time for everyone. Kelsey, Jessica, and I chatted about life, fashion, and about how much Jessica and I loved Kelsey's red hair!

We got a good number of clothing changes in for Kelsey, and also gave her an up-do for a few looks. While she was back at home-base getting changed or having her hair and makeup touched up, my friend Matthew Simmons, who was helping me with Kelsey's shoot that day, gleefully posed for the camera so we could test the next lightning set up, as evidenced by the following images:

But in all seriousness, we all had a ton of fun that day, despite the fact that Kelsey and I briefly became a smorgasbord for the mosquitos we ran into during the beginning of the day (Remind me to keep bug spray in my camera bag from now on...).

Here is a preview image from Kelsey's session:

Nashville Portrait Photographer | Behind the Scenes | Lisa Van-Atta Beauty Shoot

HOW DID I NOT POST THIS ALREADY?! I swear I had already posted the behind the scenes from this session, but APPARENTLY... apparently... I did not.

SO.

Here goes...

A few months ago I was contacted by Meko Davis, of Makeup By Meko, about doing a beauty-style test shoot. I was ecstatic that she had asked, because I was looking to network with more makeup and hair artists to partner with on my own session. I had checked out her body of work and it was beautiful!

It took us a little while to get together, due to some extenuating circumstances that would come up for either her or me, BUT... we finally nailed down a date and time that worked for everyone, and we made this shoot happen!

The shoot was very centered around Meko's makeup and hair stylings. It was the first session in a long time that I wasn't planning or styling, and I have to say, it was a nice little break to just let her work her magic and then apply my finishing touches with the light, camera, and post-production. :)

It was really cool getting to watch Meko work. I am always amazed at the detail makeup and hair artists go into, in order to make a look come out flawlessly. I always learn a little bit here and there as well. Hanging out with makeup artists has really helped my ability to apply my *own* makeup, haha!

Not only was Meko amazing, but so was our model, Lisa Van-Atta! There have been a few times that I have worked with models who were actually camera shy. (Can you believe that? A camera shy model? Haha). But Lisa was most certainly not one of them! Even *while* I was testing my lighting, she was giving it 100%. I honestly didn't have to direct her as much as I have some other models I've worked with, and that was also great. With Meko being so amazing, and Lisa being on her game, it was a really relaxing, kind of therapeutic in a way, shoot for me, haha.

It was such a pleasure getting to work with both Meko and Lisa! I even invited Meko back to work on a Sarah Ngo-Loose's senior portrait session with me! (She did a beautiful job on that session too, by the way). As always with my 'Behind the Scenes' blog posts, I will be following up in a little bit with a post containing finished images. Franklin Senior Portrait Photographer | Sarah | Behind The Scenes

Hello there, friends! Two blog posts in one week?! I'm on a roll! ;)

So back in November I had the pleasure of photographing Sarah Ngo for her senior portraits!

Sarah is a cheerful young lady with a lot of ambition! She's a volleyball player, coaches a younger team, and is a theatre performer.  And she is a straight up TROOPER, let me tell you... because the day of our session was not exactly a warm one... but she did fabulously none the less!

The day of Sarah's session, I met her and her family at her home, along with my hair and makeup artist for the day, Meko Davis of Makeup By Meko. I had the opportunity to work with Meko a month or so prior to Sarah's session, on a makeup-centric test shoot with model, Lisa Van Atta, that I will be posting about later on. Because of that session and getting to experience Meko's fabulous work first hand, I knew she'd do a great job with Sarah, and I was not disappointed!

During our pre-shoot consultation, Sarah let me know that she wanted soft, luscious curls for her shoot, as well as a natural look for makeup. Meko was able to beautifully achieve what our goal was for Sarah's look, and I think everyone was pretty thrilled with the results!

While Sarah was getting her hair and makeup done, we chatted with her about school, volleyball, theatre, her Thanksgiving break, her plans for the coming holidays, and of course we spent some time narrowing down her adorable wardrobe selections. She had so much to choose from, and it was all so awesome, it was hard to pick out just a few outfits!

Once we had Sarah's outfits narrowed down, we hashed out a plan for how were were going to attack the multiple locations we had planned for her session. It was definitely an adventure bouncing from location to location, and I was a little concerned that it would wear Sarah out, but once again she proved to be a tough gal and she kept on pushing ahead full steam until we were finally finished.

At the end of Sarah's session, we found ourselves in downtown Franklin. It was freezing cold, but Sarah's step-mom, April, was very sweet and treated everyone to coffee from Starbucks, while we continued to work, so we could all keep warm!  All in all, Sarah's shoot was a successful one, despite the bitter temperatures, and it was certainly a blast working with her, her father Bao, and April!

I will be posting more finished images from Sarah's session, but for now, here is a sneak peak of one of the finished images from Sarah's session:

Senior Portrait Photography | Behind the Scenes | Hannah W.

Hey there, friends!  About two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of working with the beautiful Hannah W. on her senior portrait session!  Hannah also happens to be my second senior model, my other senior model being Emily G. Hannah and I met at my place so that she could get her hair and makeup done before we traveled to our location.  I had the immense pleasure of getting to work with Jessica Steingard once again!  She is an incredibly talented hair and makeup artist, super friendly and SUPER fast.  If you're ever looking to hire a makeup artist and hairstylist for any reason, definitely give her a shout!

While Jessica worked on Hannah's hair, we had some fun conversation, including stories Hannah told us about her newly rescued kitten! (Awww, kitties!!! <3 ).

After Jessica was done with Hannah's first look, and Hannah's outfits were picked out for the session, we hit the road and traveled to our location.  I was super excited because it was a *gorgeous* day out.  I'm glad it was too, because there was quite a hike between a few of the spots we wanted to shoot at.

During Hannah's session, we were able to get in four different looks.  All of them tied together in the sense that they all had a bohemian, "Free People" kind of feel to them, which was perfect for Hannah's look and personality.  For example, when Hannah first rolled up to my house, she exited her vehicle not wearing shoes.  She explained to me that she loved the outdoors and she loved being barefoot.  After I heard that, it solidified even more for me, that we were going to get along just fine.  While the bottoms of my feet don't have QUITE the adventurous hiking experience as Hannah's do, I tend to prefer bare feet myself.  Shoes are just so constricting, don't you agree? ;)  That's why, for my every day wear, my show of choice is the Puma Speedcat.  Super thin, super light almost like you're not even wearing shoes.  Haha!  But I digress...

For each look, we changed up Hannah's accessories and for a couple looks Jessica changed Hannah's hair and makeup a bit.  There were a set of accessories that were pretty consistent throughout, except for one look that I recall, and those were her bracelets.  We had started the session out without them, but a few shots in, Hannah jumped up and exclaimed, "I need my bracelets! I forgot to put them back on, and I feel naked without them!"

Totally fine with me!  They went great with her various looks! :)

Hannah's shoot went super smoothly.  She actually has some experience as a model, so she made my job super easy as far as posing and expression was concerned.  She was super comfortable in front of the camera and not afraid to try anything!  I love that!

At one point I let her know that I wanted to go into some tall grass.  I had bug spray with me, but I let her know that if she was not comfortable trudging through some deep vegetation and taller grasses, that she was more than welcome to decline.  My number one concern for my clients is that they're happy and comfortable, so I would never make them do anything they wouldn't want to do.  But Hannah was a trouper.  She was ALL about going into the grass, and so we did.  And we got some killer shots because of it!  (It also helped that we walked out of there chigger-bite-free... but still.  LOL -- I think the fact that it was a little cooler around the time her session was done, helped that fact.)

Here is a preview of one of my favorite images from the day -- One of the shots I got after our foray into the tall grass.:

Senior Photography | Caroline Grace Gladden

Senior model Caroline Grace Gladden reached out to me about the possibility of doing a photo shoot together.  Well she had great timing, because I had just been thinking to myself that I wanted to do a senior photography style shoot. After much planning and schedule syncing, the team finally pin pointed a day that would work for all of us.  Originally, the plan was to shoot on location, however as Nashville weather would have it, rain was in the forecast for the entire weekend.  SOOOO... It was time for plan B.

Sunday May 5th came and I had everyone meet me at my house.  At this point, I have to pause a moment an give a shout out to my friend Lindsey Baylor. She came early to help me set up, she assisted with the shoot, she took the behind the scenes photos you will see in this post and she was responsible for wardrobe.  She is amazing and I can't thank her enough!

Anyway, once everyone arrived, we set up a makeup station for the wonderful Alexis Phoenix Faith to work her makeup magic.  Once she was finished, the fabulous Glynnis Garcia of GG Hair Designs got to work on Caroline's hair.  While that was happening, Lindsey went to work taking photos and putting together the first look, while I made the team some coffee and did some behind the scenes videoing (the results of which you unfortunately will not see, because it was my first attempt at doing such at thing, and I just simply did not get enough footage to turn it into anything long enough to even be considered a BTS video.  Haha.)

Oh yeah... And let us not forget about how I almost destroyed the backdrop before we even got a chance to start shooting... Whoops.

See, my husband and I acquired a roll of newsprint, which was sitting in its normal spot behind the backdrop, which was obstructing one of the walkway from my kitchen to my living room.  I went behind the backdrop in an attempt to retrieve something (I don't even remember WHAT at this point), and I unknowingly knocked the newsprint (which isn't that light) off balance, and it fell into the backdrop, RIPPED it down... And I nearly had a heart attack until I realized the ripping sound was just the paper coming undone from the wall, but luckily there were no tears in the paper itself.  So some wrinkles and a few knocked over books later, we got the backdrop hung once again and we were back in business!

Hey.  Stuff happens.  Haha.

So we did some studio work for the first look.  Then for the second look, we actually went outside and did some fun stuff out by tree covered in vines, accompanied with a little overgrown grass.

All and all, the shoot was great, my team was great and the model was fabulous!

Have a look for yourself!

Model Photography | Alexa Poletti | Sneak Peak

About 2 or so months ago, I was minding my own business, multi-tasking between editing and surfing the Book of Faces, when suddenly a little red notification popped up, informing me that Alexa Poletti had posted to my wall. What she had posted to my wall was a very enthusiastic cry of, "Oh why must you live so far away!  I want to shoot with you!!!"

Little did she know, I had been wanting to shoot with *her* for a long while now, so I immediately replied with, "Psh... 3 hours?  That's not *that* far... Let's make it happen!!"

And we did.

Nashville Portrait Photography, Tennessee, Alexa Poletti, Model Photography

One Sunday, in the beginning of January, I made the 3 hour trek down to Washington D.C. to meet the wonderful Alexa Poletti and do an AWESOME shoot in the thick fog that the weather decided to gift us that day.

The fog was so thick driving down to D.C., that when I crossed over a long bridge that ran over the river, it felt like I was flying in the air, because all I could see around my car were clouds.  It was at that moment I realized how epic it would be if the fog kept up throughout our shoot, and I was hoping with all my might it wouldn't dissipate by the time I arrived.

By the time I got into D.C., the fog had indeed seemed to have lifted, replaced only by cloudy skies and mist.  But, much to my delight, Alexa informed me that the locations that she had previously scouted out were close to a river, so there would probably be plenty of fog for us to play in!

And BOY did we get to play in some fog!!

Nashville Portrait Photography, Tennessee, Alexa Poletti, Model Photography

It was a TON of fun shooting with Alexa!  It turns out that we have a decent amount in common, and our sense of humors are right on par with each other, so it made for some pretty fun and interesting conversation while we shot.

We did a handful of different looks that day.  The first bunch were variations of 2 different, edgy, rock looks that Alexa put together, and the 3rd was a fun, casual look.  Alexa did all of the styling, and I'd say she did a pretty darn good job!  Not only is she a fabulous model, and great at putting a look together, but she's *also* an awesome photographer!  Be sure to check out her work!

Nashville Portrait Photography, Tennessee, Alexa Poletti, Model Photography

Now, as most of you are probably well aware by this point, my husband and I JUST moved to Nashville, Tn!  We've officially been here 7 days, and I love our little house and I am excited to see what the future holds for us here!  That being said, the past 7 days have been nothing but moving, unpacking, unpacking... moving... unpacking... cleaning... unpacking... cleaning.............. unpacking........................

I started to go through photography withdrawal!  HAHA!

Finally, today I sat down and busted out some work that had been put on hold due to the move, and I managed to pull one of the images from Alexa's shoot that I particularly love.

Now, when you see this one again later, it may look a bit different.  I found myself playing around in Photoshop earlier this evening with different looks.  It's fun to experiment from time to time to see what I can come up with, and I ended up creating something that I think works pretty well with, at least the portion of the shoot that this image is from, however, I don't know if I'm 100% sold on it yet.

SO... rather than posting my experiments and then changing my mind when I wake up and come back to see this with fresh eyes tomorrow, (Today, by the time you all are reading this, since it is currently 4:38am... ) I decided that I would just give you a "clean edit" preview of this shot.

I may decide to keep it this way... I may decide to go crazy... who knows?!

I'm terribly unpredictable. ;)

But in any case, here is one of my favorite shots from the first part of the day with Alexa!!

Emily Catherine ROCKS!

Recently I had the pleasure of working on a rock 'n roll inspired shoot with up and coming modeling talent, Emily Catherine!  Let me tell you, if you are a photographer or other industry artist, and you get the opportunity to work with Emily... DO IT! This chick is awesome!  She's driven, she's fun, she takes great direction and she's not shy!  Which, surprisingly enough, a lot of models are, which sometimes makes it difficult to get them to convey the look you're going for.  NOT an issue with Emily!

For that matter, if you're NOT a photographer or other industry artist, check out her Facebook page anyway, check our her other work, click 'like' on her page, and leave her some love!

So the idea for this session came about thanks to Ebay!  I was actually in the midsts of shopping for the wardrobe I did with Amy Keyser when, randomly this dressed appeared in my window under "other items you may like", or whatever that section of the Ebay page is called.  The second I saw it, I thought to myself, "That would be AWESOME for a rock style inspired shoot!

I clicked.

I bought.

I messaged Emily.

After Emily expressed excitement in working with me on this shoot, I OF COURSE messaged Shawnnah of Notorious B.eau.ty!  This wonderful woman is the same fantastic hair and makeup artist that I collaborated with on Amy's shoot!  I was so excited to be able to collaborate with her again.  Shawnnah is not only great at her craft, but she's an amazing person to be around and I always enjoy our pre-shoot banter while she works on the model!

Bethlehem Photographer | Emily McGonigle Photography | Model Photography | Emily Catherine

Halloween is around the corner and I recall Shwannah saying something about having a special on Halloween makeup, for those of you who are less artistically inclined and would like some expert help on your killer [no pun intended] look!  SHOOT THIS GIRL A MESSAGE... Do it.  Go HERE, click 'like', and send her a message to set up your appointment!

After Shawnnah enthusiastically agreed to our developing project, I continued to shop for more pieces of Emily's outfit.  One of the pieces I found, was an awesome cropped jacket that I found at The Attic, in Bethlehem, Pa!  This place is the hippest consignment shop I know of in the area!  If you live around Bethlehem, and are looking for some cool pieces for your every day look, definitely stop by and check it out!

At this point I'll also take the opportunity to give a shout out to my friend, April Piazza who is the author of the Steel City Retro segment of the retro-inspired blog Wink Pinup.  April writes about the great places in the valley, like The Attic, that you can find awesome retro pieces for affordable prices!  So if that's your thing, stop by and check out the blog!

So anyway, the day that Emily's dress ACTUALLY arrived... I made a very interesting discovery, in that the dress was actually two pieces... and the *skirt*... was actually MUCH shorter than I was expecting.  Right away I set out to the fabric store in search of more tulle, which I attached with my  mad hand-sewing skills to her skirt to make it a bit longer and fill it out a bit more.

I'd be lying if I said that I didn't have any help, as the wonderful Shawnnah definitely helped me fringe out the newly added layers, the day of the shoot.  (THAT is just ONE of the many reasons why I love her!)

Bethlehem Photographer | Emily McGonigle Photography | Model Photography | Emily Catherine

Once the skirt was filled out and cut up, it was time to shoot!

This is just one of the awesome images that Emily, Shawnnah and I were able to create together!  There are definitely more to come, but I couldn't help showing at least *one*!

Cathedra & Amy K.

GUYS!  I'M CAUGHT UP! No... SERIOUSLY... I'm CAUGHT UP!

Aside from a few personal sets (like some shots of my husband's former band, and shots from when we were out west on our vacation)... I am OFFICIALLY caught up on all of my editing.

So how did I celebrate this momentous occasion?

I shot some more!  DUH!

So this past weekend was INSANE.

First up was my shoot with Grant W. of the band Cathedra this past Saturday.  Grant contacted me a while ago with a concept for the cover of his band's album.  The concept sounded awesome so of COURSE I said yes!  The only catch?  Paint.  LOTS. and lots of paint.

By the time we were through with the shoot, I had red, blue, and purple paint all over my kitchen counters and my kitchen floor.  Blue speckles of paint peppered the dinette and living room's carpet.  The window sill in the dinette had red paint smeared on it... and my BATHROOM...

Well... see for yourself:

Looks like an indoor paintball game gone awry, doesn't it?  Haha!

Despite the cleanup that followed the shoot, however, the shoot itself was a ton of fun!  It allowed me to finally get to work with models Charlie Heller, and Emily Catherine, and I got to work with the awesome Grant Williams on bringing his concept to life!

TOTALLY WORTH IT!

Then the next day, I did a fashion shoot with Amy Keyser and got to work with the amazing Shawnnah Jade of Notorious B.eau.ty!  That girl is just awesome at what she does!

Here are a few behind the scenes shots of Shawnnah getting Amy ready to model!

April P. | The 2-post set | Includes the remastered "Punk Rock Shoot" edition!

Huwhaat? Yeah.

So once upon a time, I was going through my website... deleting proofing galleries and whatnot... and after my website asked me SEVERAL TIMES to confirm the deletion of... what I was deleting... I suddenly ate my heart after I yelled at it and said, "YES, ALREADY!  JUST DO IT!" and hit the final button.

Why?

Because I had deleted April's BLOG POSTS... not her no-longer needed proofing gallery.

::smacks forehead::

That was the end of me titling blogs and galleries too similarly.

SO.

This is what we're gonna do...

Because April is amazing... I'm going to give her back the lost blog entries, PLUS... a new one.

Rock 'n Roll

Back in August, before I set out for the first leg of the tour, I got a call from makeup artist, Desiree Fritz, about a model she wanted to do a punk-rock inspired shoot with.  Excited to get one last one in before I was shipped off for a month, I agreed to do the shoot, and that's where I met April!

It was a ton of fun getting ready for the shoot.  There was a lot of fun conversation... and as I recall delicious bagels!

Desiree worked on April's punky look while we conversed and talked about our plans for the shoot once we got to the location.

The shoot itself was a blast!  We were under a bit of a time constraint that day, however, we were able to still have a relaxing, fun shoot, and got some great shots in the process!  It also helps that April is a great model and doesn't need much direction.

And yes... the watermarks say "Emily Rose Photography", as this shoot was done *before* the name change, haha.  Don't get confused.  It's STILL "Emily McGonigle Photography" ;)

Sassy Boudoir Preview

This past Saturday, April and I got together once again, but for something a little different.  We ended up doing an impromptu Boudoir session.  I always enjoy working with April, and this session was no different!

I went to her home to do the session, and while unfortunately we lost the day light before we began shooting (like I said, it was impromptu, so we started later than we should have as far as window light is concerned), we still got some really great images from her session!

April also had 3 adorable cats... ALL of which wanted to be a model at one point or another, haha!  Ava, her little girl, managed to jump in for a few shots before we had to gently escort her off the premises...

I absolutely can't wait to start editing the images from this session!  Keep an eye out for the final images coming soon!  ^_^
