Kelsey Satterwhite - Behind the Scenes Senior Portrait | Emily McGonigle Photography

This past weekend I had the pleasure of working with Kelsey Satterwhite, one of my 2014 senior models, on her senior portraits! The day of Kelsey's session, it was hot and the forecast threatened rain. However, knowing that we would have indoor options to camp out in, should the rain decide to come, we went ahead and pushed forward with the shoot anyway, and hoped the rain would stay away.

On Kelsey's shoot, I once again had the pleasure of working with the fabulous Jessica Steingard. When both Jessica and Kelsey arrived, we got to chatting about how Kelsey wanted her hair and makeup done for her session. She described soft curls and light makeup that enhanced her facial features, rather than heavier makeup that drew attention away from her natural beauty.

Kelsey's pamper session was a great time for everyone. Kelsey, Jessica, and I chatted about life, fashion, and about how much Jessica and I loved Kelsey's red hair!

We got a good number of clothing changes in for Kelsey, and also gave her an up-do for a few looks. While she was back at home-base getting changed or having her hair and makeup touched up, my friend Matthew Simmons, who was helping me with Kelsey's shoot that day, gleefully posed for the camera so we could test the next lightning set up, as evidenced by the following images:

But in all seriousness, we all had a ton of fun that day, despite the fact that Kelsey and I briefly became a smorgasbord for the mosquitos we ran into during the beginning of the day (Remind me to keep bug spray in my camera bag from now on...).

Here is a preview image from Kelsey's session:

Franklin Senior Portrait Photographer | Sarah Ngo

Back in January, I posted about a session I did in November, with Sarah Ngo. Well, this week, I had the pleasure of begin able to deliver her album to her, so I thought I'd celebrate by posting images from her session!

Here are a few of my favorite images from Sarah's session.

The above image was actually designed as a triptych series inside of Sarah's album, as displayed above. As we were shooting, I got an idea for a quick "action" series of images, and I'm a big fan of flowy skirts and dresses, so we gave it some movement and that was the result!

It was mostly overcast all day long, but RIGHT before the sunset, we got lucky and some light peaked out from behind the clouds. So we raced over to a new location to try and catch the last bit of light and color in the sky before the sun disappeared again.

I love Sarah's style! The pairing of her red sneakers with this dress gave these images just the right amount of *pop*.

As I mentioned in my previous post, Sarah is a volleyball player and coaches a younger team as well! She's super passionate about what she does!

It was such a pleasure to get to work with Sarah and her family!

Thank you again to Meko Davis for her wonderful work with Sarah's hair and makeup!

Brentwood Senior Portrait Photographer | Hannah Wilmes

Hey there friends! I hope you all have been doing well!

Well, I'm back with another batch of final images from a senior portrait session! This time, the images are of the one and only Hannah Wilmes! You may remember Hannah from her behind the scenes blog post a while back.

Like Emily Gabhart, Hannah was one of my Senior Models for 2013! She was amazing to photograph and was completely comfortable in front of the camera! I got to work with the lovely Jessica Steingard again on Hannah's session. Jessica did a lovely job with Hannah's hair and makeup, and was super great with changing looks on the fly as Hannah changed outfits and we moved from location to location.

The day of Hannah's session was simply beautiful. We had a lot of sunlight to work with and a huge area to photograph within. There were a lot of different looks accomplished that day. Hannah was down for anything I threw at her! Tall grass? No problem! Tree climbing? Great! Trekking barefoot to the next location? ...Well, I didn't make her do that... her free-spirited self decided upon that one all on her own, but I thought that was pretty awesome, haha.

When we first started shooting, Hannah had started without her signature bracelets. At one point she expressed how strange it felt to not be wearing them, and I asked her if she'd like the photos better *with* them in, to which she confirmed she would. So I asked her to put them back on, because I wanted these photos to be something she would love, and if not having her signature in them was going to affect that, I didn't want her not to have it! PLUS... they really did help to compliment her look. Of course there was an outfit that just looked better without them, but she wore them whenever it suited the style!

Here are some favorites from Hannah's session that day:

Franklin Senior Portrait Photographer | Emily Gabhart | Featured Senior Model

Hey everyone! How's it going? Is everyone surviving the snowpocalypse? Nashville, hasn't really gotten a lot of snow (If you could even call it that), but I know my family and friends back in Pennsylvania are dealing with some pretty epic winter conditions right now.

So, to help bring a little warmth and sunshine to your life, I thought I'd post up some of Emily Gabhart's final senior portrait images! You can see the "behind the scenes" blog post about her session, here!

This post, in particular, is also going to be a little bit different than what I USUALLY do... and that's because I am happy to announce that Emily Gabhart is Emily McGonigle Photography's Featured Senior Model of 2013!!! (Or maybe it's 2014... Her session was in 2013, but she's going to be *featured* in my 2014 materials... how does that work? How does that get worded? That's a serious question... Haha).

Every year I put out a 'magazine' for my senior clients that not only gives specific information concerning senior portrait sessions, but features images from previous Emily McGonigle Photography senior sessions, *and* an interview with the previous year's Featured Senior! So that is what this blog post is going to be... The interview with Emily Gabhart that will then be printed in my 'Seniors' magazine for this year! :)

Emily Gabhart is a cheerful Independence High School senior, with a bright smile and big plans for her future career in musical theatre. The original date set for Emily's shoot was gross and threatening rain all day. We rescheduled the session, and then of course it never rained. But it all worked out for the better, because the day we actually held Emily's photo shoot, turned out to be G-O-R-G-E-O-U-S! The only downside was the misquotes while shooting in some trees, but Emily was a trooper and pushed forward to get the shot. We had a blast that day playing in the sunlight while we listened to Bruno Mars radio on Pandora!

What are your plans for after graduation?I plan on going to college for Musical Theatre. I haven't decided where I'm going yet, because I am still auditioning at schools.

What are you most excited about for college?I'm so ready for the change. I'm very excited to be in a theatre program with people who are serious about theatre as a profession.

How have you changed and grown during your four years in high school? How do you hope to grow in your four years of college?I have become so much more outgoing over these four years. I was so shy when I first came to high school, and now I'm willing to talk to anyone! I hope that in college I can become more and more confident in myself and my abilities.

What is your funniest memory from High School? There are so many things that I could write here. One of my personal favorites is when I was about to go in for an audition for our schools one acts and I bent over and completely split my pants... I auditioned with ripped pants.

What do you do for fun?I love camping, baking, fishing, painting, singing, going to movies with friends, and I love just hanging out with people. I love trying new things and I'm in love with nature and the outdoors.

What do you want to be when you grow up?A dinosaur! Just kidding. I want to be a Broadway performer. I love singing and dancing and acting, and I believe I do a pretty good job at it. So that would be my dream job!

Who is your favorite band or musical artist?I love Bruno Mars, but Ella Fitzgerald is the greatest performer/singer ever.

What is your favorite move [movie]?*Well my favorite move is twerking... My favorite movie is Moulin Rouge!

*When the interview questions were written, there was a typo in the question, but Emily's response was so funny I chose to include it in the final print!

What is your favorite book?I love the book The Help. It is so beautifully written and it's wonderful!

What is your favorite magazine?I love In Style :)

Where is your favorite place to shop?Even though I can't afford anything in there, I love everything from Anthropologie.

Where is your favorite place to hang out?My favorite place to hang out is anywhere my friends are, and that's usually in my bonus room, watching scary movies.

Social media: Love it or hate it?I don't love Facebook, but I could spend hours on Pinterest.

What is your favorite website to visit?Modcloth.com... I could buy everything off that website!

What is the most important non-academic thing you learned during high school?Never be afraid to be yourself. When I learned that lesson, I really started to enjoy life, because what other people thought of me didn't matter anymore.

If money was no object and you could have anything one thing in the world, what would it be?I would say having my Pinterest life becoming a reality would be pretty awesome!

Who is your biggest celebrity crush?I love Ewan McGregor. I have for many years.

What is your guilty pleasure?I will sit and watch Netflix for hours and hours. It's not a good way to spend my time, but some days that is just what feels right.

Starbucks or a local coffee shop?Starbucks. I love my Black and White Mocha!

What is your favorite color? It's a tie between blue and yellow.

Chocolate or fruity candies? It depends on the day. Some days Twix, others Sour Gummy Worms. Those are my favorites.

What is your favorite drink?I mostly drink water, but coffee and hot tea are a close second. I hate soft drinks.

What song immediately makes you jump up and dance and sing?Well, it's not a great song, but I love "Money Make Her Smile", by Bruno Mars. (This can also be considered a guilty pleasure).

Do you still watch cartoons? If so, which ones?I don't like cartoons except for one: Spongebob. I will watch the classic Spongebobs all the time. I can quote the majority of them.

If money was no object, where would you want to visit?I would go back to Italy. It was so wonderful! I would love to live there if I could!

You're going to live on a deserted island for the rest of your life, and you are allowed to take 5 things with you. What do you take?My brother - He makes me laugh, My phone with WIFI, A lifetime supply of sushi, A computer that could access Netflix, My dog Pepper!

Who inspires you?My inspirations change, but right now it's Jennifer Lawrence. I love how quirky she is. She knows how to make the best of things and she isn't afraid to be herself. She is also super funny!

Franklin, Nashville, Senior Portrait Photographer, Emily McGonigle Photography, Emily Gabhart
Franklin, Nashville, Senior Portrait Photographer, Emily McGonigle Photography, Emily Gabhart

What advice do you have for upcoming seniors?Don't be afraid to try new things senior year. There are so many people who would do a show senior year and decide that they loved it and they would go on to do it in college. Get out of your comfort zone. You'll be so glad you did!

What were your three favorite moments during your session with Emily McGonigle Photography?Well, my dressing room was an abandoned barn, so that made for an entertaining time! While taking one of my pictures, a dog jumped in the lake behind me and that made me laugh. [And] I loved having my hair and makeup done. That was a ton of fun! ■

Franklin Senior Portrait Photographer | Sarah | Behind The Scenes

Hello there, friends! Two blog posts in one week?! I'm on a roll! ;)

So back in November I had the pleasure of photographing Sarah Ngo for her senior portraits!

Sarah is a cheerful young lady with a lot of ambition! She's a volleyball player, coaches a younger team, and is a theatre performer.  And she is a straight up TROOPER, let me tell you... because the day of our session was not exactly a warm one... but she did fabulously none the less!

The day of Sarah's session, I met her and her family at her home, along with my hair and makeup artist for the day, Meko Davis of Makeup By Meko. I had the opportunity to work with Meko a month or so prior to Sarah's session, on a makeup-centric test shoot with model, Lisa Van Atta, that I will be posting about later on. Because of that session and getting to experience Meko's fabulous work first hand, I knew she'd do a great job with Sarah, and I was not disappointed!

During our pre-shoot consultation, Sarah let me know that she wanted soft, luscious curls for her shoot, as well as a natural look for makeup. Meko was able to beautifully achieve what our goal was for Sarah's look, and I think everyone was pretty thrilled with the results!

While Sarah was getting her hair and makeup done, we chatted with her about school, volleyball, theatre, her Thanksgiving break, her plans for the coming holidays, and of course we spent some time narrowing down her adorable wardrobe selections. She had so much to choose from, and it was all so awesome, it was hard to pick out just a few outfits!

Once we had Sarah's outfits narrowed down, we hashed out a plan for how were were going to attack the multiple locations we had planned for her session. It was definitely an adventure bouncing from location to location, and I was a little concerned that it would wear Sarah out, but once again she proved to be a tough gal and she kept on pushing ahead full steam until we were finally finished.

At the end of Sarah's session, we found ourselves in downtown Franklin. It was freezing cold, but Sarah's step-mom, April, was very sweet and treated everyone to coffee from Starbucks, while we continued to work, so we could all keep warm!  All in all, Sarah's shoot was a successful one, despite the bitter temperatures, and it was certainly a blast working with her, her father Bao, and April!

I will be posting more finished images from Sarah's session, but for now, here is a sneak peak of one of the finished images from Sarah's session:

Senior Portrait Photography | Behind the Scenes | Hannah W.

Hey there, friends!  About two weeks ago, I had the pleasure of working with the beautiful Hannah W. on her senior portrait session!  Hannah also happens to be my second senior model, my other senior model being Emily G. Hannah and I met at my place so that she could get her hair and makeup done before we traveled to our location.  I had the immense pleasure of getting to work with Jessica Steingard once again!  She is an incredibly talented hair and makeup artist, super friendly and SUPER fast.  If you're ever looking to hire a makeup artist and hairstylist for any reason, definitely give her a shout!

While Jessica worked on Hannah's hair, we had some fun conversation, including stories Hannah told us about her newly rescued kitten! (Awww, kitties!!! <3 ).

After Jessica was done with Hannah's first look, and Hannah's outfits were picked out for the session, we hit the road and traveled to our location.  I was super excited because it was a *gorgeous* day out.  I'm glad it was too, because there was quite a hike between a few of the spots we wanted to shoot at.

During Hannah's session, we were able to get in four different looks.  All of them tied together in the sense that they all had a bohemian, "Free People" kind of feel to them, which was perfect for Hannah's look and personality.  For example, when Hannah first rolled up to my house, she exited her vehicle not wearing shoes.  She explained to me that she loved the outdoors and she loved being barefoot.  After I heard that, it solidified even more for me, that we were going to get along just fine.  While the bottoms of my feet don't have QUITE the adventurous hiking experience as Hannah's do, I tend to prefer bare feet myself.  Shoes are just so constricting, don't you agree? ;)  That's why, for my every day wear, my show of choice is the Puma Speedcat.  Super thin, super light almost like you're not even wearing shoes.  Haha!  But I digress...

For each look, we changed up Hannah's accessories and for a couple looks Jessica changed Hannah's hair and makeup a bit.  There were a set of accessories that were pretty consistent throughout, except for one look that I recall, and those were her bracelets.  We had started the session out without them, but a few shots in, Hannah jumped up and exclaimed, "I need my bracelets! I forgot to put them back on, and I feel naked without them!"

Totally fine with me!  They went great with her various looks! :)

Hannah's shoot went super smoothly.  She actually has some experience as a model, so she made my job super easy as far as posing and expression was concerned.  She was super comfortable in front of the camera and not afraid to try anything!  I love that!

At one point I let her know that I wanted to go into some tall grass.  I had bug spray with me, but I let her know that if she was not comfortable trudging through some deep vegetation and taller grasses, that she was more than welcome to decline.  My number one concern for my clients is that they're happy and comfortable, so I would never make them do anything they wouldn't want to do.  But Hannah was a trouper.  She was ALL about going into the grass, and so we did.  And we got some killer shots because of it!  (It also helped that we walked out of there chigger-bite-free... but still.  LOL -- I think the fact that it was a little cooler around the time her session was done, helped that fact.)

Here is a preview of one of my favorite images from the day -- One of the shots I got after our foray into the tall grass.:

Back in May I posted a Behind the Scenes blog post about a shoot that I did with senior model, Caroline Grace Gladden.  I told most of the story of the shoot in my previous post, so I'll keep this one short and simple. :) I did, however, want to extend many thanks to Caroline, Alexis, Glynnis and Lindsey for their patience and hard work surrounding this shoot!

And without further ado...

Senior Photography | Caroline Grace Gladden

Senior model Caroline Grace Gladden reached out to me about the possibility of doing a photo shoot together.  Well she had great timing, because I had just been thinking to myself that I wanted to do a senior photography style shoot. After much planning and schedule syncing, the team finally pin pointed a day that would work for all of us.  Originally, the plan was to shoot on location, however as Nashville weather would have it, rain was in the forecast for the entire weekend.  SOOOO... It was time for plan B.

Sunday May 5th came and I had everyone meet me at my house.  At this point, I have to pause a moment an give a shout out to my friend Lindsey Baylor. She came early to help me set up, she assisted with the shoot, she took the behind the scenes photos you will see in this post and she was responsible for wardrobe.  She is amazing and I can't thank her enough!

Anyway, once everyone arrived, we set up a makeup station for the wonderful Alexis Phoenix Faith to work her makeup magic.  Once she was finished, the fabulous Glynnis Garcia of GG Hair Designs got to work on Caroline's hair.  While that was happening, Lindsey went to work taking photos and putting together the first look, while I made the team some coffee and did some behind the scenes videoing (the results of which you unfortunately will not see, because it was my first attempt at doing such at thing, and I just simply did not get enough footage to turn it into anything long enough to even be considered a BTS video.  Haha.)

Oh yeah... And let us not forget about how I almost destroyed the backdrop before we even got a chance to start shooting... Whoops.

See, my husband and I acquired a roll of newsprint, which was sitting in its normal spot behind the backdrop, which was obstructing one of the walkway from my kitchen to my living room.  I went behind the backdrop in an attempt to retrieve something (I don't even remember WHAT at this point), and I unknowingly knocked the newsprint (which isn't that light) off balance, and it fell into the backdrop, RIPPED it down... And I nearly had a heart attack until I realized the ripping sound was just the paper coming undone from the wall, but luckily there were no tears in the paper itself.  So some wrinkles and a few knocked over books later, we got the backdrop hung once again and we were back in business!

Hey.  Stuff happens.  Haha.

So we did some studio work for the first look.  Then for the second look, we actually went outside and did some fun stuff out by tree covered in vines, accompanied with a little overgrown grass.

All and all, the shoot was great, my team was great and the model was fabulous!

Have a look for yourself!
